Commonly Asked Questions About Scar Revision

“I went to the ER and they told me to follow up with a plastic surgeon.”

- anonymous patient dreamstime_scar revision

I hear this exact quote about 10 times a month!  Scar revision is by far one of the common office procedures I perform.  These range from ear ring “tear-through” repair, facial piercing hole repair, ugly trauma scars, to previous surgical incision scars that healed poorly.  I unfortunately don’t have a magic wand (I’m working on it though!) and cannot erase scars.  I can only offer you a finer, better concealed scar.  Every patient has a different scar that has multiple reconstructive options and also limitations to its improvement.  So, it is important that we have a one-to-one discussion to see which option is best for you.

Here are a several of the most commonly asked questions I get when consulting with potential candidates for the procedure.

Commonly Asked Questions

Do I have to have the surgery under general anesthesia?

Most scar revisions can be treated under local anesthetic in the office.

How long does a scar revision take?

This depends on the area where the scar is located, amount of scar, and the complexity of the deformity.

Are scar revisions covered by insurance?

Some insurance carriers may cover scars that cause significant deformity.  Patients should check with their carrier to determine coverage.  However, scar revision is often considered cosmetic in nature and not covered by most policies.

How much does a scar revision cost?

Scar revision starts a $500 and up (all inclusive).  Please see the procedure price list for details of what is included.

How long is the recovery?

Most minor scar revisions only require a few days to a week for the incision to heal.  Swelling begins to fade within a few days depending how large the scar revision was performed.

Also, please see my new scar revision page to read more about the procedure and if you are a candidate.
